Debt Crisis Brings Yamaha Motorcycle Sales to a Halt

Yamaha Motor Company, the second largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, is reporting that slumping sales in North America and Europe are almost twice as bad as forecast. This combined with a debt crisis spreading all over the world has put a dent in demand for Yamaha two-wheeled vehicles. It has taken just three months for trouble in financial markets to put a strain on Yamaha’s holdings.

What Does This Mean for Yamaha Jobs?

Sales of Yamaha products are so low in developed countries that Yamaha has been cutting jobs left and right, and closing plants worldwide — Yamaha is planning to shut down five of its Japanese factories and at least one boat manufacturer in the United States over the next year and a half. After the closure of an Italian factory last year, Yamaha says it must cut an additional 1,000 jobs by 2012. This comes fast on the heels after a cut of over 1,100 jobs in the year 2009.

How Bad Are Yamaha Sales?

Last year marked the first loss for Yamaha since 1984. Sales of two-wheeled vehicles fell 45 percent in North America alone, with an additional 25 percent drop in European countries. Because the American and European market make up a quarter of Yamaha’s motorcycle sales, these losses hit the Japanese company hard.

Sales of larger “leisure style” motorcycle products are also on the decline, with models like the $20,000 Royal Star Venture slumping enough to counteract a rise in four-wheeled Yamaha vehicle sales.

How Is Yamaha’s Competition Holding Up?

The world’s largest motorcycle maker, the Honda Motor Company, said in April of 2010 that they expect a very small drop in American two-wheeled vehicle sales — a total of less than 1 percent. Yamaha’s largest American competition, Harley-Davidson Inc., is reporting slumping sales as well, with sales falling $15 million from just last year. Yamaha has been hit hardest, reporting a 4.9 percent drop in sales this month alone. Yamaha is trading at 1,146 yen per share in Tokyo financial trading, against a Nikkei 225 Index drop of just 1.1 percent. That means Yamaha is under performing compared to most Japanese companies.
